Contra Dancing
Nashville Country Dancers
Holding Weekly Contra & English Country Dances
Like so many things American, our folk dances are indeed the result of other national dances stirred
together in the melting pot of traditions. Contra dancing is a mix of long ways dances from England and
Scotland and square dances from France.

Dancers dance in long ways sets, in parallel lines, remaining with their partner throughout the dance.
With each repetition of the dance, which takes 32 bars of music (generally lasting about a minute), they
execute a series of figures involving their partner, and another couple, poetically and appropriately
referred to as ‘neighbors’. Upon completion of one repetition of the dance, they take leave of those
neighbors, advancing to new ones in their line, to repeat the whole affair one more time.
